Non c’è niente di più problematico di un cane disobbediente. L’educazione del proprio cane è fondamentale per la sua sicurezza, la tua e quella degli altri animali e persone. Che abbiate un cucciolo o cane già un adulto, dovreste comunque iniziare l’addestramento il prima possibile. Non sapete come iniziare o ci avete provato senza ottenere risultati? Ecco 5 passi fondamentali per educare il proprio cane.
Sapere chiaramente quali obiettivi raggiungere
Tutti vogliamo che il nostro cane sappia seguirci, fermarsi o sedersi al nostro comando. Però, prima di concentrarsi sugli ordini che vogliamo che impari, chiedetevi domande del tipo:
Dove dormirà? Lo farò salire sui divani? Potrà accedere a tutte le stanze della casa? Mangerà nello stesso posto in cui mangiamo noi?
Coerenza da parte di tutta la famiglia
Vietare al proprio cane una cosa che gli è concessa fare dagli altri membri della famiglia non farà altro che confonderlo: non capirà perché con alcuni può farlo e con altri no. Tutti i membri della famiglia devono avere chiare le regole a cui il cane deve obbedire.
Riconoscere il proprio nome
Questo è un passo molto importante: insegnare ad un cucciolo a riconoscere il suo nome. Il tempo necessario di un cane per imparare il suo nome è, in media, tra i 5 e i 10 giorni. Un buon modo per iniziare è quello di chiamarlo quando si ha il contatto visivo. Una volta raggiunto l’obbiettivo chiamatelo anche quando non vi guarda più.
Educarlo positivamente
È dimostrato che è più efficace educare rafforzando i comportamenti positivi. Se rimproveri il tuo cane solo per il suo cattivo comportamento, senza dare valore al resto, si demotiverà. Tutti associamo la ricompensa al dare un premio (snack) al cane. È un ottimo metodo, ma non è l’unico: possiamo anche usare le carezze e i complimenti.
Sessioni corte e in posti diversi
Educare al cane dovrebbe essere un momento divertente per entrambi. Sono consigliate brevi sessioni di lavoro (di circa 15 minuti): in questo modo, nessuno dei due si annoierà. Si consiglia anche di variare il luogo: alcuni ordini rispettati a casa potrebbero essere ignorati altrove. Più variano i luoghi e gli orari di una risposta positiva, più il comportamento del cane sarà affidabile.
