Le origini del Gatto domestico
Prima di diventare domestico il gatto ha pagato la sua indipendenza con la fame senza mai scendere a compromessi per insediarsi in una caverna fin dall’epoca preistorica. La sua indipendenza e libertà valevano di più. Quando ha per propria volontà raggiunto i luoghi popolati dagli esseri umani ne è entrato a testa alta, con gli onori addirittura riservati agli dei.
Origini
Il gatto domestico ha origini africane. Quando si insediò nell’Egitto dei Faraoni fu l’unico di tutta la famiglia dei Felidi ad aver accettato di convivere con l’uomo. Una volta che l’uomo ne ha capito l’utilità il gatto è diventato presenza importante nella società, soprattutto per la caccia ai topi, portatori di epidemie all’epoca. Nel 3000 a.C. questo antico animale intraprende il suo alto e dignitoso rapporto con l’uomo, facendosi persino divinizzare dagli antichi egizi. Nel III millennio a.C. nasce l’identità domestica del gatto. Alla morte il gatto veniva sepolto con gli onori e le cerimonie dei funerali di stato. Anche le leggi faraoniche difendevano e controllavano l’esistenza del gatto tanto che chi ne uccideva uno riceveva pena capitale.
Diffusione in Europa, Asia e Oriente
Grazie al commercio con gli Egizi, il gatto fu conosciuto dai Greci. Bello, domestico, pulito, inodore e ottimo cacciatore di topi, in Grecia il gatto fu accolto con entusiasmo. Dall’Egitto così il gatto arrivò in tutta Europa e in Asia. In Giappone il gatto fu apprezzato per la sua bellezza e come simbolo di pace e fortuna. Tenuto in alta considerazione estetica e spirituale in Asia e Egitto, utilizzato e difeso in Europa, al gatto attendeva un periodo drammatico: il Medioevo, dove era il simbolo del Demonio e delle streghe.
Il Gatto ai giorni nostri
Dal 1800 in poi, superate le stragi del Medioevo, inizia il riscatto del gatto. Torna ad essere considerato un innocente animale da compagnia degli esseri umani e viene sempre più apprezzato per la sua bellezza. Tutto questo fino all’arrivo dei giorni nostri, dove il gatto viene considerato compagno di vita.
